Our words did not flow easily Our tongues made different shapes But I know what you dreamed of In 1948 You'd gather all your school friends The playground was your stage You sang their favorite ghazals The children shout your name Like a distant galaxy There was much more to you Than the elegance that I see In these old photographs So when I'm singing this story I'm filling in the gaps I am your legacy Though I can count on both my hands The times you looked upon my face I feel you in my heart Your melodies flow through my veins So from the other side Peering into my queer world You bless my journey When you'd hold me in your gaze I'd never felt so safe Your sari was a shield For every fear or foe I'd face You soothe me with you voice While you play the violin A scientist of song Your traits I inherit Like a distant galaxy There was much more to you Than the elegance that I see In these old photographs So when I'm singing this story I'm filling in the gaps I am your legacy Though I can count on both my hands The times you looked upon my face I feel you in my heart Your melodies flow through my veins So from the other side Peering into my queer world You bless my journey Bless my Bless my journey

about

I didn’t get to know my grandmothers very well and they didn’t get to know me. Especially my maternal grandmother because of the language barrier. I was in the here and they were in India. Neither of them knew that I was queer. But I do know that they both loved music. Neither of them got to pursue it much after their arranged marriages near or before the age of 20. One wanted to be a singer and the other played harmonium and violin.

I wrote this song a year ago after my maternal grandmother had passed away to honor and remember them, as I choose my own journey to live openly as queer person and a musician. Since then, my dad also passed away so I guess in away this is song is also for him.

So I hope that through this, I can connect with the three of them in the after life and allow them to know me fully and I receive their love and blessings.
